What documents do I need to extend a South African visa?
Most visitor’s visa extensions need the same six things. None of them are hard to get — the difficulty is knowing exactly what counts, and making sure nothing is missing before you reach the VFS counter. Here’s the full checklist.
The six documents, at a glance
- Your passport bio page — the photo page
- Your current South African visa
- Proof of accommodation for your extended stay
- Proof of funds — usually three months of bank statements
- A return or onward travel ticket
- A short written reason for extending (your covering letter)
Clear phone photos and screenshots are fine for most of these — you don’t need a scanner. What matters is that every detail is legible.
Passport and current visa
You’ll need the bio page of your passport (photo, name, date of birth, passport number) and your current visa — the sticker or stamp in your passport. The single most important detail here is your visa’s expiry date: this is what you’re extending, and it’s easy to confuse with your passport’s expiry. Make sure your passport itself is valid for the full length of the extension you’re requesting.
Proof of accommodation
This shows where you’ll be staying. Any of the following work:
- A hotel or Airbnb booking confirmation
- A lease or rental agreement
- A letter from your host, if you’re staying with someone — it should include their ID number and contact details
The dates should cover the period you’re asking to extend into.
Proof of funds
You need to show you can support yourself. The standard is three months of bank statements, all pages included. If someone else is supporting you, a sponsor’s letter plus their statements can work, though this adds complexity. There’s no universally published minimum balance, but the statements should clearly show enough to cover your stay comfortably.
Return or onward travel
This demonstrates that you intend to leave when your extension ends. A booked return flight is ideal; an onward ticket to another country also works. If you haven’t booked yet, a short letter of intent explaining when and how you plan to depart can be used in the meantime.
Reason for extension (your covering letter)
This is the part people find hardest, because it’s the one thing you write yourself. It only needs to be two to four honest sentences: why you’re extending, and when you intend to leave. If you’re not sure how to phrase it, Sal can draft it for you from your other documents.
Mixing up your passport expiry with your visa expiry; bank statements with pages missing; accommodation dates that don’t cover the extension; applying too late; and a covering letter that gives no clear departure date. Every one of these is avoidable with a proper check before you go.
Not sure your documents are right?
Upload what you have — Sal reads each one and tells you exactly what’s missing before you pay a cent at VFS.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use phone photos instead of scans?
Yes. Clear photos and even screenshots of your banking app are fine, as long as every detail is legible.
How many months of bank statements do I need?
Three months is the standard, with all pages included. If a sponsor supports you, their statements plus a sponsor letter can be used instead.
What if I don’t have a return ticket yet?
A confirmed onward or return ticket is best, but a short letter of intent explaining when and how you plan to leave can be used while you finalise travel.
